The specific theme of the webinar from Regional and City Infrastructure System Research Group was ‘A Joint Planning Design Studio Focusing on the Informal City: ITB Experience 2014-2021’. This webinar was special, there are some speakers from academic lecturers and students as well. This webinar was attended by the academic community of SAPPD ITB and alumni of joint studio program.
First, Dr. Heru Purboyo Hidayat Putro gave greeting and introduction to Regional and City Infrastructure System Research Group. Next the Dean of School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Develoment (SAPPD), Dr. Sri Maryati gave a welcome speech. The webinar was opened by the moderator, Mrs. Shanty Yulianti Rahmat, Ph.D. The presentation began with the explanation regarding the rationale for a Studio on the informal City. Dr. Ninik Suhartini showed that there are some advantages of Joint Studio Program. In this program, students can work in small collaborative group with multiple learning approaches and it generates informal interaction with academic staff, visiting lecturers, and residents set within an overarching guiding framework of studio aim and activities allow more frequent discussion, feedback, and interaction.
Next, Dr. Paul Jones explained the reasons why the joint studio program chose informal city as a studio focus. It’s because, recently urban planning focuses on top-down western planning, often masterplan based. Beside that, a “one size fits all” spatial model of the city development is too often applied in diverse city settings in the name of attaining sustainable development. Furthermore, informality and informal settlements are not addressed in mainstream pedagogy. Beside that, this joint studio program will give students the real experience, the realities of the development that the informal urbanization produces. This program also gave the students the ability to learn, listen, and respect the views of diverse groups from many diverse ethics, socio cultural, and religion backgrounds. After that, Dr. Ninik gave the recap of Studio Joint Program that ITB has been held since 2014-2021.
After we heard the explanation from academic lecturers, then the students also shared their experiences from the studio that they just joined before. The first student was E.G.I Sevwandi from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and the next student was Fitria Nur Anggraeni, Master of Development Studies Student Institut Teknologi Bandung. The students said that joint studio program really gave them a really good experience where they could work together with students from around the world, understanding Sustainable Development Goals more and know how to formulate plans to achieve SDGs targets.
