San Diego, July 10–20, 2025 — Prestigious recognition was awarded to Mohammad Anas Ardiansyah, an alumnus of Urban and Regional Planning (2021), School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development (SAPPK) ITB, who proudly represented Indonesia at the Esri User Conference 2025, the world’s largest gathering of Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals, held in San Diego, California.

Anas was named the recipient of the Esri Young Scholar Award 2025 for his project, “Valuing Carbon Storage: A Path to Carbon Trading in Rebana.” The research integrates spatial analysis with urban planning approaches to explore the potential of carbon trading in supporting sustainable development.

At the conference, Anas’s project was showcased in the renowned Map Gallery, where it stood alongside the works of Young Scholars and GIS innovators from across the globe. The experience provided a valuable platform for sharing insights and learning from groundbreaking projects in the field of geospatial science.

The Esri User Conference 2025 carried the theme “GIS – Integrating Everything, Everywhere,” highlighting how GIS connects data, analytics, and real-world applications to drive informed decision-making and positive change. During the 10-day event, Anas attended technical sessions and classes covering urban planning, climate impacts, and remote sensing, which enriched his perspective on the diverse applications of GIS.

One of the most memorable moments for Anas was the Awarding Ceremony, where he met Jack Dangermond, Esri’s founder and president. Dangermond delivered an inspiring message emphasizing the vital role of young professionals in shaping the future through GIS.

Reflecting on his journey, Anas stated:
“It was an honor to represent Indonesia on a global stage. Seeing my project displayed at the Map Gallery and engaging with the international GIS community was both humbling and inspiring.”

To capture his full experience, Anas created an interactive StoryMaps, documenting conference highlights and insights, which can be accessed at arcg.is/1rm45X1.

This achievement not only underscores Anas’s personal success but also demonstrates the growing contribution of SAPPK ITB alumni and Indonesian scholars to global discussions on sustainability, technology, and innovation.
