Himasari Hanan studied architecture at Institut Teknologi Bandung and got a Bachelor degree in Architecture in 1980. She got the Master of Architectural Engineering degree from the Post Graduate Program in Human Settlement, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Belgium in 1987. In 1996 she finished her doctorate program and got the degree Doctor Ingenieur from the Faculty of Landscape Planning, majoring in Urban Studies, Kassel University, Germany.

Himasari Hanan was Head of the Department of Architecture ITB in 2001 – 2007. Since then she has been appointed as Head of Academic Committee of The Architecture Programme. She was also a member of the Academic Committee of the Master Programme of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture ITB. In addition to education programme, she was involved in the development of research activities at ITB as a member of Research Committee of the Institute for Research and Community Service ITB in 2008 – 2014. At the moment she is a member of the Acadamic Senate of the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development and the Academic Senate of ITB.

Himasari Hanan has received numerous research grants from the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Indonesia and ITB. Her research interests are subjects in Vernacular Architecture and Urban Design, Modern and Urban Architecture, Urban Livability, Creative Industries, and Millenials Lifestyle.
