Guest Lecture Explores the Role of GIS in Understanding Place

Bandung — Sekolah Arsitektur, Perencanaan, dan Pengembangan Kebijakan ITB (SAPPK ITB) organized a guest lecture on Friday, 13 March 2026, from 16:00 to 17:30 WIB, featuring Olaf Schroth, Professor at Weihenstephan Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences.

In his lecture titled “Understanding Place Through Data: An Introduction to GIS in Landscape and Urban Planning,” Professor Schroth introduced participants to the fundamental role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in analyzing and interpreting spatial data within the fields of landscape and urban planning.

The session highlighted how GIS can support evidence-based planning by enabling the visualization, integration, and analysis of complex environmental and urban data. Participants gained insights into how spatial data can be utilized to better understand place, inform design decisions, and address contemporary challenges in sustainable development.

The lecture also emphasized the growing importance of digital tools in planning practices, particularly in responding to issues such as urbanization, environmental change, and resilience. Through practical examples and case studies, Professor Schroth demonstrated how GIS can bridge the gap between data and decision-making processes.

This guest lecture provided a valuable opportunity for students and academics to expand their knowledge, engage in international academic exchange, and strengthen their understanding of innovative tools in planning and design.
