GLOBAL LECTURES-GLOBAL STUDIO IN 7th INTERNATIONAL JOINT STUDIO:
UNDERSTANDING THE SELF-ORGANISED CITIES IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH

Master program of Urban and Regional Planning, SAPPD-ITB successfully hosted 7th International Joint Studio: Understanding the Self-Organised Cities in the Global South, which was held virtually on 22 February-5 March 2021. The studio invited 14 speakers from University of Sydney, University of Aveiro, UCLA, MIT, German University in Cairo, New York Institute of Technology, Ritsumeikan University, SAPPD ITB and Bandung City Government and 126 students from undergraduate and master degrees of Urban and Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Tourism and Development Studies. The activities including lectures, studio work and student presentation in the final session in front of international guest critics from KU Leuven, Tongji University, German University in Cairo, University of Sydney and University of Aveiro. There were interactive sessions with local residents of Lebak Siliwangi and Tamansari where students discussed further their ideas and inquiries on the case study.
International Joint Studio provides essential knowledge and skill utilised by planners and designers to create, research, analyse, and preparing spatial plans and design projects. The studio is the place for students to expand their academic and professional skills and to enrich student’s perspectives on different contexts of planning and design. Planning systems introduced and explored are those exercised in cities of developing countries including formal, informal and hybrid mechanisms that evolving in an urban environment. The main theme of International Joint Studio 2021 is Understanding the Self-Organised Cities in the Global South and with focus on planning and design adaptations related to Covid-19 pandemic including identifying myriad interventions and modifications in housing, basic infrastructure, development management, local economy, transport, public space, and disaster mitigation. The case study is located in informal settlements of Lebak Siliwangi and Tamansari, Bandung City, Indonesia.
The studio applied new approaches in teaching, collecting data and analysis to cope with mobility restrictions during the pandemic so as students can maintain the depth and the breadth of their work. Teaching structure of the studio including lectures, studio work, and student presentations
International Joint Studio is an annual event conducted by Urban Regional Planning Program of SAPPD ITB since 2015 and has been recognised globally and receiving several international awards including World Urban Solutions by World Urban Campaign 2016 and Student Award Special Mention in ISOCARP World Congress 2020.
