From November 12-24, 2015 a jointly-organized Studio Design Workshop/Travelling Studio took place successfully at the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development ITB. Around 35 students from both universities participated in the workshop in which 20 ITB students are from the study program urban design (10 students) and landscape architecture (10 students). The rest of 15 MSD students are coming from various disciplines, such as landscape architecture, urban planning and urban design.

The workshop is part of the academic cooperation scheme between two universities, which had been initiated through long academic correspondences since 2013. The academic cooperation scheme is also related to several visits of MSD delegates prior to the joint studio workshop (2010, 2013, 2014 and 2015). In course of the cooperation, the MSD also offers special PhD scholarship for young teaching staff of the SAPPD ITB. This all will be soon stipulated by the signing of a technical agreement in the beginning of 2016, including the scheduled final exhibition of the Joint Studio at the University of Melbourne (Feb. 2016).

This multi-disciplinary/culturally workshop per se deals with urban development scheme for four significant urban areas in Bandung, i.e. the Simpang Market, Plaza DAGO intersection, Cikapundung settlement and the corridor of Jalan Hasanudin. The workshop deals specifically with the question how do we design with (urban) informality? Thus, multi-scalar approaches and creative ideas on urban strategic solutions in terms of planning and design are expectedly to be developed in the workshop. Besides the lectures, interviews and site visits, several guests and speakers (Endang Triningsih/PhD. cand., Mrs. Yanti/Bandung Creative Street Market and Col. Rudi/Head of Military District) were also invited to the discussion sessions of the workshop. A city tour of Bandung and cultural program –a visit to Angklung Mang Udjo- were also part of the Joint Studio Design Workshop/Travelling Studio 2015.

The MSD students were led by Prof. Sidh Sintusingha, PhD (landscape designer) and Amanda Achmadi, PhD (architecture historian). Respectively, the ITB students were jointly supervised by Budi Faisal, PhD (landscape architect/ planner and MSD alumni), Haryo Winarso, PhD (urban planner), and Prof. Widjaja Martokusumo (urban designer, and recipient of Melbourne Asia Visiting Fellowship Program/MAVFP 2015-2016), including two junior staffs, R.R. Dyah Asih and T M Aziz Soelaiman. A final presentation, with special reviews by the mayor Ridwan Kamil, was eventually held at the Municpality of Bandung on Monday, November 23, 2015 from 3.30-4.30 pm.
