SAPPD Global Studio

SAPPD Global Studio is an annual international event led by Urban Regional Planning Program of School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development (SAPPD) ITB since 2015 and aiming at providing essential knowledge and professional skills for future planners and designers to plan and design urban development projects in the Global South.

Since 2015, SAPPD Global Studio has welcomed hundreds students from global partner universities and receiving several international awards including World Urban Solutions by World Urban Campaign 2016 and Student Award Special Mention in ISOCARP World Congress 2020.

The 2024 Global Studio explores the notions and interconnectedness of digital divide and exclusion in vulnerable communities in Indonesia’s urban areas, namely “kampungs”. The studio does this by collecting and interpreting baseline data on digital literacy and digital inclusion in the kampung ‘grass roots’ context, with the overarching aim of improving connectivity and accessibility to digital infrastructure as utilised for the sustainable economy. Despite an increase in the digital literacy index for Indonesia, many people in urban areas such as those living in kampungs still face challenges associated with the ‘digital divide’ in terms of affordability, accessibility, and ability to utilise digital services. As a result, residents and households are excluded from the benefits of digital transformation by not being able to maximise the full economic and social benefits. These challenges are most acute in urban informal settlements (kampungs) where the population strongly relies on a range of informal economic and social activities.

2024

The 2024 Global Studio explores the notions and inter-connectiveness of digital divide and exclusion in vulnerable communities in Indonesia’s urban areas, namely “kampungs”.

The Methods.

applied in the 2024 Global Studio comprise:

undertaking participatory mapping so as to enhance an understanding of the scope and depth of what digital exclusion and inclusion means in the kampung context, including who is affected, how and why.

elaborate on the different intervention points to access the sustainable cycles of urban economy for vulnerable urban communities.

generate a framework by which to develop an affordable grassroots-based mobile digital application to integrate economic and social activities.

provide recommendations/designs to strengthen household/community wide digital knowledge and applications by generating improved planning, monitoring and evaluation such as integrating green initiatives.

identify the relevant SDGs such as SDG 17 and SDG 11 (the latter the sustainable cities SDG) which aim to enhance digital literacy and digital inclusion at community levels with mainstream planning and development arrangements (for example, sharing green economy ideas by digital).

as a result of the above work, identify possible “new” SDG targets and indicators which could apply in the kampung context so as to reduce digital exclusion.
